Hi everyone,

I’m currently preparing for the IELTS exam and facing a big challenge in the Reading section. I often run out of time before finishing all three passages, even though I understand most of the vocabulary and question types. Could anyone share effective time management strategies for IELTS Reading?

For example, how much time should I spend on each passage, and is it better to skim the text first or go directly to the questions? Any practical tips or personal experiences would be really helpful!

Time management in the IELTS Reading section is definitely one of the toughest parts, but with the right strategy, you can handle it well. You get 60 minutes for 40 questions, so ideally, spend about 20 minutes per passage — that includes reading, understanding, and answering.

Here’s a simple strategy that works for many test-takers:
  • Skim the passage first (about 2–3 minutes) to understand the main idea. Don’t focus on every word — just get the general meaning.
  • Read the questions next, underline keywords, and then scan the passage for those words or related ideas.
  • For matching headings or True/False/Not Given questions, focus on paragraph-level understanding. For short-answer or completion questions, locate keywords quickly.
  • If you’re stuck on a question, don’t waste more than 40–50 seconds. Mark it and come back later if you have time.

Practice is the real key — try doing timed mock tests regularly to train your brain to read faster under pressure. Over time, your speed and accuracy will naturally improve.
