There are IELTS aspirants who have a good command of reading but are unable to answer all three sections in one hour. It is not just about understanding the content, but managing your time well in the process. This article will show you how you can plan your time management strategy.

Understand the Time Constraint

IELTS Reading comprises 40 questions to be completed within one hour. The average amount of time given for each question is 1.5 minutes; however, not all the questions are difficult enough to take the same amount of time. Passage 1 is easy, whereas Passage 3 requires an understanding of technical terms and arguments. Students tend to give equal attention to all passages, resulting in a lack of time left to complete the last passage.

To overcome such difficulties, it is advised to allocate time according to the level of difficulty of the passage. Passage 1 should be attempted within 15 minutes, Passage 2 within 20 minutes, and Passage 3 within 25 minutes.

Start with a Clear Strategy

Many candidates begin reading without a plan, which leads to confusion and wasted effort. A structured approach begins with skimming the passage for two to three minutes. Focus on headings, topic sentences, and repeated terms to understand the overall theme.
After skimming, move directly to the questions. This creates a clear objective and allows you to read with purpose. When you know what you are searching for, your brain processes information faster and more accurately.

Use Skimming and Scanning Effectively

Skimming will help you comprehend the general meaning of the text, whereas scanning will help you find some exact details. Both of these approaches play a key role in managing time when dealing with the IELTS Reading section.

For instance, when the answer is related to the year or the name of some researcher, then scanning would help you find it in seconds without analysing the whole paragraph. Studies have found that targeted scanning can boost your efficiency by up to 40%.

Apply the Question-First Technique

Reading questions before the passage directs your attention to key information. This technique prevents passive reading and keeps you focused. When you encounter keywords in the questions, underline them mentally and look for synonyms in the passage.
IELTS rarely repeats the exact wording. Instead, it paraphrases ideas. A candidate who recognises synonyms can locate answers faster and avoid confusion.

Control Your Time Strictly

One of the biggest mistakes involves spending too long on difficult questions. If you cannot find an answer within one minute, move forward. Returning later with a fresh perspective often leads to quicker solutions.
Strong candidates treat time as a fixed resource. They avoid perfectionism and focus on maximising correct answers across the entire test. Leaving five questions unanswered at the end can reduce your band score significantly, even if earlier answers were accurate.

Develop Smart Answering Habits

Each question type requires a slightly different approach. For True/False/Not Given questions, avoid assumptions and rely strictly on the text. For matching headings, focus on the main idea of each paragraph rather than the details.
Write answers immediately on the answer sheet, as no extra transfer time is provided in the Reading test. This habit prevents last-minute panic and reduces the risk of errors.

Practise Under Real Conditions

Consistent practice under timed conditions builds both speed and confidence. Use a stopwatch and simulate exam settings regularly. Over time, your reading speed improves, and your decision-making becomes sharper.
Data from IELTS preparation studies indicates that candidates who practise timed tests at least three times per week improve their reading scores by up to one band within a month. Regular exposure trains your brain to process information efficiently under pressure.

Maintain Focus and Composure

Mental discipline plays a crucial role in time management. If you panic during a difficult passage, your reading speed drops and errors increase. Staying calm allows you to think clearly and make quicker decisions.
Short mental resets, such as pausing for a few seconds between passages, can help maintain concentration. A focused mind processes information faster than a stressed one.

Conclusion

Time management in the IELTS Reading test can be accomplished through proper planning, self-discipline, and practice. Students who plan well, skim and scan efficiently, and do not get stuck on difficult questions will have a high probability of succeeding. An organised time management approach guarantees that candidates will spend equal time on all three reading texts.
